Caterpillar is applying lessons from its autonomous mining operations to broader artificial intelligence deployments across construction, manufacturing, and its own workforce. The industrial equipment maker has spent years automating haul trucks, drills, underground loaders, and dozers in mining environments where labor shortages and hazardous conditions make the technology valuable. Now the company is expanding that approach into more dynamic settings such as construction sites and quarries, according to Chief Technology Officer Jaime Mineart.
Mineart said at the Ai4 conference in Las Vegas that Caterpillar is entering a period where the learning from mining can be transferred to other jobsites. The company offers a software command center, fleet management, and remote terrain intelligence as part of its autonomous toolkit. It also sells remote-controlled construction equipment. The core challenge, she noted, is not building the technology but incorporating it into customer workflows and daily operations.
One product stemming from that effort is the Cat AI Assistant, a tool that lets field technicians use voice commands to access repair procedures, troubleshoot issues, and identify needed parts before starting a job. Mineart said the assistant is now used by customers, operators, and technicians. It relies on Caterpillar’s proprietary data, which includes information from roughly 1.6 million connected assets worldwide and more than 16 petabytes of structured data.
Caterpillar is also using AI for site scanning and generating digital twins in manufacturing to analyze operations. The company applies AI across its enterprise functions and software development, including using AI agents to modernize legacy code, generate and test new software, and catch defects earlier. Mineart emphasized that making machines autonomous is only part of the work; companies must also rethink how people interact with the technology and how existing processes change.
The company leans on experienced operators to help train its AI systems, drawing on decades of institutional knowledge. As machines become more autonomous, some operators may move from controlling a single machine to overseeing multiple machines from a remote command center. This shift is creating a new task for Caterpillar: training its 118,000 employees. The company plans to spend $100 million over the next five years on workforce training in AI, autonomy, and robotics.
That investment comes as Caterpillar benefits from the broader AI infrastructure boom. The company reported record quarterly revenue of $20.5 billion in the second quarter, helped by strong demand for power-generation equipment used in data centers. Its power-generation division saw sales rise 72% to $3.10 billion. Chief Executive Joe Creed said no one is slowing down when it comes to demand for cloud computing and generative AI infrastructure.
