Microsoft’s Surface lineup now spans enough models and price points that choosing one requires matching a device to a buyer’s priorities, and the recent arrival of new Surface Laptop and Surface Pro versions has complicated that decision further. The company announced the Surface Laptop 8th Edition and the Surface Pro 12th Edition as follow-ups to its 2024 models, introducing the Snapdragon X2 chips at much higher prices. Because the new silicon raises the cost of entry considerably, the value of the newest devices is in question for US buyers comparing them against discounted older stock.
The Surface Laptop (7th Edition) remains the best Surface device to buy for most people, even though it launched in 2024 and is now two years old. It pairs a 13.8- or 15-inch display with Qualcomm Snapdragon X processors, offered as either the X Elite or the X Plus, and its 3:2 aspect ratio gives users more vertical room for webpages, spreadsheets, and apps. The smaller model has a brighter 120-Hz screen, a full HD 1080p webcam, a customizable haptic feedback trackpad, and a snappy keyboard. Performance was smooth in testing across many open windows, tabs, and apps, though the machine is not built for graphics-intensive work such as video editing or gaming.
Pricing is central to the choice. The 7th Edition officially rose to $1,500, but it sold for under $1,000 through most of 2025, and a 512-GB configuration was recently available for $1,200. The 2026 Surface Laptop 8th Edition starts at $1,600, and its only upgrades are the option of a Snapdragon X2 Plus or X2 Elite plus new colors, with both generations configured identically at 512 GB of storage and 16 GB of RAM. Similar price increases have appeared on other devices moving to the Snapdragon X2 Plus, including the Asus Zenbook A16.
The Surface Pro 13 is the best Surface tablet Microsoft has made, combining a 13-inch tablet with a built-in kickstand and a detachable keyboard. It runs on the Snapdragon X Elite or X Plus, and the higher-end option carries an OLED screen that can connect to up to three 4K external monitors. A review unit with the X Elite, 16 GB of RAM, and a 1-TB solid-state drive ran more than 15 hours on a full-screen, full-brightness YouTube playback test, beyond Microsoft’s claim of up to 14 hours. The Flex Keyboard is an excellent but pricey upgrade, and it is not bundled, nor is the Surface Slim Pencil 2.
The Surface Pro 12, a smaller and cheaper tablet that keeps the Snapdragon X Plus chip with two fewer cores, maintains the premium look of the line with slight downgrades to the webcam and display. At launch, the pricing was the main problem, with Microsoft positioning the device below the Surface Pro 13.8 and immediately stopping sales of the lower-tier configuration. Buyers weighing the lineup also have the Surface Laptop Ultra to consider, a previewed model due out later this year.
