Apple has prototyped a stylus for its upcoming foldable iPhone, but the accessory may never reach consumers, according to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The prototype is described as “stubbier” than the existing Apple Pencil models used with iPads. Like those styluses, it would attach magnetically to the side of the foldable device for storage and charging. That attachment point, however, poses a problem because it would interfere with opening the foldable when the stylus is not in use.
Gurman also noted that a stylus could leave marks on the display, since foldable devices tend to have more delicate screens than traditional smartphones. The report points out that even Samsung restricts certain S Pens to work only with its foldable phones. The foldable iPhone is expected to debut on September 9, at which point it will become clear whether the stylus is still part of the plan or has been shelved entirely. As of now, the accessory remains uncertain.
On a more certain note, Gurman reported that Apple is testing white and dark gray color options for the ceramic cases of the upcoming Apple Watch Series 12. The new smartwatch models are also expected to include a software feature that keeps the heart-rate sensor collecting data throughout the day, rather than only during physical activity or at random intervals. This would represent a shift toward continuous health monitoring for the wearable.
Separately, Apple is reportedly revamping its fitness and health app to resemble the interfaces used by companies like Whoop and Oura. Those brands are known for their subscription-based, data-heavy wellness tracking, and the redesign would bring a similar look to Apple’s native app. The update is part of a broader push to make the Apple Watch a more comprehensive health tool for American users, who increasingly use wearables to manage fitness and wellness.
For those considering an upgrade, Gurman indicated that the Apple Watch is more likely to see a major redesign next year, though that timeline could slip to 2028. The ceramic case options and new sensor behavior are part of the current testing cycle, but the larger design overhaul remains further off.
