Apple Arcade subscribers now have another way to play college football, as Retro Bowl College+ arrived on the service on August 6. The game is the Apple Arcade edition of New Star Games' 2023 college football spin-off, putting players in charge of one of more than 250 teams. It retains the series' pixel art style and deliberately old-school approach rather than chasing photorealistic graphics.
The gameplay keeps things simple: players drag backward from the quarterback to aim a pass, swipe to move the ball carrier, and use similarly basic gestures for kicks. Defense is largely handled by simulation. Off the field, however, there is more to manage, including player ratings and morale, facility upgrades, budget oversight, and potential headaches from college athletes that go beyond what happens on the gridiron.
The standard version of Retro Bowl College is free on the App Store but offers a $0.99 Unlimited Version and Coaching Credit packs ranging from $1.99 to $9.99. Retro Bowl College+ skips that setup entirely, starting with the expanded 12-player roster, kick returns, the detailed team and conference editor, and Exhibition Mode all unlocked. There are no ads and no in-app purchases in the Apple Arcade version.
A new League Style option is also included, letting players adjust seeding, conference alignments, and available teams to mirror league structures from past years. The game ships with updated league data for 2026, and players can start a career under an earlier setup with those changes rolling in as seasons progress. The regular App Store version has since received League Style as well.
Apple Arcade's football lineup is growing. Madden NFL 27 Arcade Edition is now on the service, and another New Star title, NFL Retro Bowl '27, is scheduled for September 3. The retro styling has been central to the series since its start, with New Star Games releasing the original Retro Bowl on mobile in January 2020. Studio creator Simon Read has said that revisiting the Tecmo football games of the 1980s and '90s was all the inspiration he needed for his take on American football.
Retro Bowl College followed in September 2023, keeping the easy-to-grasp action while adding college-specific management elements such as recruiting, limited budgets, and tracking player GPAs. That mix remains in College+. The tiny players may look like they came from a much older console, but the coaching screens involve balancing scholarships, facilities, and player development before the next kickoff.
Choosing among the Retro Bowl titles depends on which management challenges appeal most. The original focuses on pro football, College adds recruiting and academic management, and the NFL editions bring in licensed teams and players. According to New Star Games, Apple Arcade now carries the entire Retro Bowl series.
