The Upgrade Trap Closing Around US Hardware Buyers
A pattern is emerging across the hardware desk that has little to do with raw performance and everything to do with control. Whether it is AMD pricing a modest CPU refresh at a premium, Apple quietly dropping older devices from support, Nvidia's flagship upscaling technology being forced onto rival hardware by modders, or users being told to audit their own phones for battery drain, the same thread runs through all of them: US consumers are being pushed into upgrade cycles that no longer serve their interests. The companies making the hardware, not the people buying it, are deciding what should be supported, what should be priced reasonably, and what should be considered obsolete.
The Price of a Standard Feature
The most direct evidence comes from a report by Tom's Hardware that AMD is preparing a Ryzen 5 7500 non-F chip. This version would apparently share identical specifications with the existing 7500F, save for one addition: integrated graphics. That is not a revolutionary feature. Intel has included integrated graphics in most mainstream desktop CPUs for years, and AMD itself has offered APUs with far stronger integrated graphics at lower price points. Yet the rumored price for this chip is 230 Euros, or roughly $267. That would place it above the 7600X3D, a chip with substantially more cache and better gaming performance, as Tom's Hardware notes. For US consumers, this is a telling moment. The 7500F was already a value-oriented chip, often recommended for budget builds because it lacked integrated graphics and therefore cost less. Stripping out a component that most buyers do not need was a way to lower the entry barrier. Now AMD appears to be treating that same component as a premium add-on, charging more for the exact same silicon with a feature that used to be standard. This is not about performance. It is about segmenting the market so that the cheapest usable option disappears, pushing buyers up the price ladder whether they want to go or not.
Leaving Hardware Behind on Purpose
The second story, from Engadget, lists ten Apple products that the company is leaving behind in 2026. The list includes older iPhones, smartwatches, displays, and computers that will no longer receive operating system updates. This is a normal part of the technology lifecycle. But the timing and scope matter. As Apple continues to upgrade its operating system and device lineup, it is making a deliberate choice to stop supporting hardware that, in many cases, is still perfectly functional. For US consumers, this creates a two-tier system of ownership. A phone from two or three years ago may run the current apps fine, but it will not run the next operating system, and eventually it will not receive security patches. The company frames this as progress, but from the consumer side it looks more like a scheduled expiration date. The pattern here is that obsolescence is no longer driven by what the hardware can do. It is driven by what the manufacturer decides to support. That decision is made in a boardroom, not in a benchmark test. And it forces US buyers to either hold onto insecure devices or pay for new ones they did not plan to buy.
Forcing a Square Peg Into a Round Hole
A third story, also from Tom's Hardware, shows what happens when consumers try to break that cycle. A modder has gotten Nvidia's DLSS 5 working on AMD's RDNA 4 GPUs, specifically the RX 9070 XT. The result is not pretty: the card only manages around 30 frames per second at 1080p, which is a severe performance hit compared to native rendering or AMD's own upscaling. The modder's stated goal is to eventually match the level of an Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti, but that is a long way off. For US consumers, this story is a symptom of a deeper problem. DLSS is a proprietary technology tied to Nvidia's hardware. AMD has its own equivalent, FSR, which works on a wider range of cards. But the fact that someone felt the need to hack DLSS onto AMD hardware at all suggests that a significant portion of PC gamers do not see these technologies as interchangeable. They want the specific feature set that one company offers, and they are willing to sacrifice stability and performance to get it. That is not a healthy market dynamic. It means that the software layer is becoming more important than the silicon itself, and that lock-in is the real product being sold. The modder's effort is a workaround, not a solution. It does not open up the ecosystem; it just proves how closed it has become.
