The Platform Erosion at the Edges of Big Tech
The four stories that crossed our desk this week share a single thread: the most consequential software moves are no longer about building bigger platforms, but about carving out independence from them. Sonos is updating its operating system to make its hardware less dependent on phone apps; Google is layering its own motion-sickness feature on top of Android; Mozilla is using Apple's own WebKit technology to block ads on iOS; and Apple is moving its App Store chief, Phil Schiller, out of the day-to-day role that defined the platform era. None of these are blockbuster product launches, but together they signal a quiet erosion of platform control - and a shift toward features that live at the edges of the big ecosystems rather than inside them.
The Systems Within the Systems
Sonos's announcement, as reported by The Verge, is the clearest example. The company unveiled two new audio products - the Sonos Beam Ultra soundbar and the Sonos Ace Ultra headphones - alongside a major overhaul of its audio operating system, dubbed Sonos 27. But the deeper story is not the hardware; it is the software. Sonos 27 represents a deliberate attempt to make the company's own ecosystem more self-sufficient. After a 2024 app redesign that infuriated users, Sonos has spent two years rebuilding trust by giving its devices more on-board intelligence and reducing the need for a constant phone connection. By embedding more logic into the speakers and headphones themselves, Sonos is quietly de-emphasizing the phone as the primary controller. In that sense, Sonos 27 is not just an update; it is a declaration that a hardware maker can retain its own platform identity even when it runs on top of Android and iOS.
Google's new “Motion Assist” feature, which The Verge says is Android's version of Apple's Motion Cues, is another example of a platform owner building a system within a system. The feature overlays dots on the screen that move in response to a vehicle's movements, reducing motion sickness. It is a small, thoughtful addition, but it also shows Google is willing to copy and extend Apple's ideas rather than cede the field. More importantly, it shows that the most user-facing innovations are now happening not in the core operating system, but in the layer of features that sit on top of it. Google is no longer just selling Android; it is selling a curated experience that competes with Apple's own curated experience, even when the underlying hardware is identical.
The Overlay Economy
Mozilla's ad blocking for Firefox on iOS, as reported by The Verge, is the most direct challenge to the platform model. The feature uses Apple's WebKit Content Blocker technology and the EasyList filter to block most third-party ads and trackers before they load. Mozilla is not building its own browser engine - it is required to use WebKit on iOS - but it is using that mandated technology to give users a level of control that Apple has been slow to offer in Safari. The result is that Firefox becomes a more private overlay on iOS, not a competitor to it. Mozilla is effectively saying: we can't beat Apple's platform, so we will become a better gatekeeper on top of it.
This is a strategic turn for Mozilla, which has long positioned itself as the independent alternative to the big tech platforms. By embracing WebKit rather than fighting it, Mozilla has found a way to deliver value that Apple itself has not. The feature reduces bandwidth and declutters mobile websites, but its real significance is that it gives iOS users a choice about what loads on their phones - a choice that runs contrary to Apple's own advertising business and its control over the Safari experience. Mozilla is using Apple's own infrastructure to subvert Apple's defaults.
