For American consumers, this is not a series of isolated launches but a coherent trend that asks them to accept less flexibility in exchange for thinness, polish, or exclusivity.
The Aesthetic of Removal
Lexarâs Muse ultra-slim portable SSD is the clearest example of removal as a design value. As The Verge reported, the drive is less than four millimeters thick at its thickest point, and Lexar achieved that profile by sacrificing a USB-C port. The company follows Xteink, which already made the same trade-off. The pattern is worth pausing on: a storage device exists to move data between machines, and its most essential interface is being deleted to make a marginally flatter object. The drive will launch in 512GB and 1TB capacities later in 2026, but the absence of a port means users will need a dongle or a different cable connection, introducing friction into the exact workflow the device is meant to serve.
This is not accidental engineering. It is a market signal that physical thinness has become a category-level priority, even when function suffers. For US consumers, who buy a significant share of the worldâs premium portable storage, the message is that aesthetics outrank utility. The trade is not forced by physics; other ultra-slim drives have kept ports. It is forced by industrial design trends that prize one dimension over all others.
Secrecy as a Feature
The second story, about Nvidiaâs DLSS 5, shows a different kind of removal: the removal of user control. As The Verge reported, the feature was officially scheduled to launch with a single game, only on RTX 50 GPUs, and with developers in full control of their artistic vision. That launch plan itself is notable - Nvidia wanted to gate a software feature behind a hardware generation, and gate settings behind developer intent. But the unofficial reality is that modders have already ported a leaked version of the software to run on almost any GPU, while allowing users to crank the feature beyond the official limits.
There are three separate removals in this story. First, Nvidia is removing software access from older GPU owners, even if those GPUs are technically capable of handling the workload. Second, Nvidia is removing the option for users to adjust the feature to their own taste, placing that authority with developers.
